Chromatography is the method used to physically separate the various components of the mixture. In this method, the components of a mixture is carried by the mobile phase, in which it is dissolved, through an absorbent known as stationary phase. The different constituents of the mixture on the chromatographic plate, travel at distinct speeds resulting in their separation, depending upon the interaction of the individual components with the mobile phase and the stationary phase.
The chromatographic result is analyzed by using a detector. A graph is plotted between the signal analyzed by the detector and the retention time.
For two separate components, two different peaks are observed. The difference in separation of the peaks, having different retention time (tR) is known as resolution.
