Difference between
mental illness and
mental disorders:
Mental illness: is maladaptive
responses to stress from internal or external environment,
evidenced by thoughts, feelings, and behaviour that are incongruent
with the local and cultural norms, and that can interfere with the
individuals social occupational and physical functioning. Eg.
Anorexia nervous.
Mental disorder: is
significant disturbance in an individual's cognition, emotion
regulation of behaviour that reflects a dysfunction in the
psychological biological or development processes underlying mental
functioning. Eg. Eating disorder
Mental disorders
have been
stigmatized:
- Many people with serious mental illness are challenged doubly.
They are challenged by stereotypes and prejudice that result from
misconceptions about mental illness.
- The impact of stigma is twofold. Public stigma is the reaction
that the general population has to people with mental illness. Self
stigma is the prejudice which people with mental illness turn
against themselves. Eg 1.Many persons can recall stereotypes about
different racial groups but do not agree that the stereotypes are
valid. 2. People who are prejudiced, on the other hand endorse
these negative stereotypes and generate negative emotional
reactions as a result.
