Baby C., 3 months old, has had severe watery diarrhea accompanied by fever for 24 hours. She is apathetic and responds weakly to stimulation. The condition has been diagnosed as viral gastroenteritis. List the major losses resulting from diarrhea and fever. List other signs or data that would provide helpful information. Explain several reasons why infants become dehydrated very quickly.
Diarrhea is a condition arising due to loss of body fluids in the form of stool. It can arise due to infection in the intestine. The intestine is unable to absorb the extra amount of water, which is excreted out along with body salts.
Baby C three month old patient who is diagnosed wfth gastroenteritis and is having diarrhea accompanied by fever for a day. Diarrhea and fever lead to the loss of body fluids from the body and causes dehydration. The liquid stool passed during diarrhea takes body salts along wah causing a shortage of electrolytes.
The salts include sodium, calcium, and bicarbonate. Loss of sodium and calcium leads to nervous impairment and cramps as they play a vkal role in the conduction of neural message and muscular movements. The bicarbonate ions maintain the pH (potential of hydrogen) of the body, so their loss disturbs the buffer system.
The loss of bicarbonate ions silts the acid-base equilibrium towards the acidic side and lowers the body pH. Excessive sweating or increased diarrhea due to fever can add to the miseries by further increasing the loss of fluids and salts from the laxly in form of sweating and liquid stool .
In the given case study, baby C is a three-month-old patient and who is diagnosed wth gastroenteritis and is having diarrhea accompanied by fever for a day she has slow responses towards stimulations The loss of
The loss of body fluids causes anxiety, restlessness, fever, insomnia, low blood pressure, reduced body weight, sunken eyes, and dizziness. The loss of body salts disturbs the electrolyte balance of the body, which can be checked using a few tests. Therefore, these signs prove that the baby has gastroenteritis
