Explain the importance of the BPS model.
As a psychologist, it is important that all the factors
affecting an individual are taken into account. An eclectic
approach is always seen as the best approach. The BPS Model refers
to the BioPsychoSocial Model where it gives wholistic importace to
Biological,Psychological, Social Dimensions.
Biological Dimensions include factors that affect a person's
physiology like genetics, nervous sytems, functioning of organs,
etc. The Psychological Dimension includes factors such as a
person's emotion, behaviour and thought. The Social Dimension
include factors such as the interactions we have with each other,
our cultural beliefs, norms that we follow, morals society imposes
on us, etc.
The BPS Model is important so that when a person is ill, we pay
attention to all 3 factors instead of focusing only on one. It is
because all the factors are interrelated. Many a times,
psychological symptoms can manifest into physiological problems.
For example, a person might be complaining of stomach ache.
However, the root of the problem can be because the student is
afraid of something persistant in his life. As a result, until the
psychological aspect of it is dealt with, the physiological symptom
would not go down. Therefore, equal importance must be given to all
3 dimensions.
