A hypothetical molecule, X–Y, has a dipole moment of 1.96 D and a bond length of 117 pm. Calculate the percent ionic character of this molecule.

Solutions

Expert Solution

dipole moment = e*l

e is charge on electron = 1.6*10-19 C

bond length             l = 117pm = 117*10-12 m

dipole moment           = 1.6*10-19 *117*10-12 =187.2*10-31C-m

theoritical value       = 1.96D = 1.96*3.335*10-30 c-m =6.53*10-30C-m

percentage of ionic charecter = theoriticl value*100/calculated value

                                          = 6.53*10-30*100/187.2*10-31 =      34% >>> answer

                                                       =
