Words that contain different prefixes and the same root can be confusing. Name 15 pairs of medical terms that have the same root but have different prefixes. Provide the definition for each term.
Prefix: one or more letters or syllables added to the beginning of a word to modify its meaning. For example the word ' Prefix ' : "pre" is the prefix .
Medical terms
( These medical terms contain same root but different prefixes such as anti, non, hypo , hyper, pyo, carcino, tachy, brady, epi, sub , peri etc.)
1. Epigastric : of or pertaining to the epigastrium/ something above the stomach
Subgastric: pertaining to something below the stomach
2. Antitoxin: Antibody that reduce or destroy the effects toxin.
Nontoxins: Substance that doesn't have toxic property.
3. Prenatal: Before the delivery of the baby/ pregnancy period.
postnatal: After the delivery of the baby
4. Unconscious: not awake/ having no awareness
Subconscious: partially conscious
5 . Monosacharides: a simple sugar, such as glucose, that has a single ring.
Polysaccharides: A polymer made of many saccharide units. Example: starch
6. Hyperthyroidism: A disease characterised by the excessive production of thyroid hormones.
Hypothyroidism: Disease condition characterised by the inadequate production of thyroid hormones.
7. Hypertension : The disease or disorder of abnormally high Blood pressure.
Hypotension : The disease or disorder of abnormally low blood pressure.
8. Tachycardia : Increased pulse rate or a rapid resting hear beat , above 100 bpm
Bradycardia : The condition of having slow heart beat, under 60 bpm ( adults)
9. Apnea: The cessation of breathing.
Dyspnoea/ dyspnea: Difficult respiration
10. Hyperglycemia : An unusually high concentration of sugar in the blood.
Hypoglycemia : A too low level of blood glucose.
11. Monoplegia: Complete paralysis of a single limb is called monoplegia.
Hemiplegia: Total or partial inability to move one side of the body.
12. Leukocyte : The white blood cells
Erythrocyte: The Red blood cells
13. Tachypnoea: An increased breathing rate
bradypnoea: A slow breathing rate
14.. Pyogenic: relating to the production of pus. Something that cause pus production.
Carcinogenic: Causing or tending to cause Cancer.
15. Pericardium : A serous membrane that surrounds the heart allowing it to contract.
Epicardium: The layer of tissue between the pericardium and the heart.
