Calculate ΔHrxn for the following reaction:
Fe2O3(s)+3CO(g)→2Fe(s)+3CO2(g)
Use the following reactions and given ΔH′s.
2Fe(s)+3/2O2(g)→Fe2O3(s), ΔH = -824.2 kJ
CO(g)+1/2O2(g)→CO2(g), ΔH = -282.7 kJ

Solutions

Expert Solution

Desired reaction is

Fe2O3(s)+3CO(g)→2Fe(s)+3CO2(g)

Given reactions

Reaction -1 : 2Fe(s)+3/2O2(g)→Fe2O3(s), ΔH = -824.2 kJ
Reaction 2 :   CO(g)+1/2O2(g)→CO2(g), ΔH = -282.7 kJ

We use Hess’s law

Lets reverse reaction first

Fe2O3(s) → 2Fe(s)+3/2O2(g) ΔH = 824.2 kJ (sing is changed while reversing)

Multiply reaction by 3

3 CO(g)+3/2O2(g)→3 CO2(g), ΔH = 3x (-282.7 kJ)

Lets add these two reactions

Fe2O3(s) → 2Fe(s)+3/2O2(g) ΔH = 824.2 kJ

3 CO(g)+3/2O2(g)→3 CO2(g), ΔH = 3x (-282.7 kJ)

------------------------------------------------------------------

Fe2O3(s)+3CO(g)→2Fe(s)+3CO2(g)    DeltH = 824.2 + ( 3* - 282.7 kJ )

                                                                            = -23.9 kJ

(Delta H of reactions added when reactions are added)

Answer : Delta Hrxn = -23.9 kJ
