Answer
Cognitive Therapy (CT), or Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), was developed by Dr. Aaron T. Beck. In the 1960's, the psychiatrist Dr. Aaron T. Beck was working on several experiments to test concepts of depression.
During his research, he found out that depressed patients demonstrated negative thoughts about three things, self, the world, and the future, which he referred to as "automatic thoughts".
He started to help patients by helping them find and evaluate these automatic thoughts. He did so, by helping the patients to change their beliefs about self, the world, and the future, and have more realistic thoughts on the same.
This method resulted in a successful change of those prior thoughts (negative) of patients with depression. This particular approach in the therapy had a long-lasting impact.
Dr. Beck called this approach, “cognitive therapy.”
This is how cognitive therapy, also known as cognitive behavior therapy was developed.
