Which of the following substances have greater average kinetic energy of its molecules at 10 degree Celsius ? (a) steel    (b) copper (c) water   (d) mercury

Solutions

Expert Solution

Solid has stronger intermoleculer forces. So, it requires a lot of energy to move its molecule. Liquid has weaker intermolecular forces than solid. So, it need less energy to move molecules. whereas gas need least because of weakest intermoecluar forces.

So, steel and copper are solid. their average energy can't be greater.

Now mercury is more denser than water. So, water has weaker intermoelcular forces. So, average kinetic energy of water molecules will be greater.

Water has greater kinetic energy

In a study of the thermal inertial properties of aerated concrete used as building material, average interior temperatures were investigated. These temperatures are known to have an approximately normal distribution. The claim is the average interior temperature is 22.5 degrees. A consumer advocate believes this temperature is in fact less than 22.5 degreess. To this end, he collects a sample of 15 measurements and finds the average temperature of the sample to be 20.9 degrees with standard deviation of 3.5...

Thermal properties A bar has an initial length of 100 mm at room temperature of 27oC. The tensile test indicates that the bar yields when it reaches is the stress level of 145 MPa and the strain value of 2.071 x 10-3. The bar is later placed in an oven and heated from room temperature to 100 oC. The linear coefficient of thermal expansion of the material is 23 x 10-6 oC-1 at 27oC, and 34 x 10-6 oC-1 at...

As you may have learned when studying the properties of thermal energy, building contractors often install double-glazed windows to prevent thermal energy (\"heat\") from entering/exiting the building. Although effective as insulators, such windows present interesting optical effects. In the figure, a double-glazed window comprises two identical panes of glass (ng = 1.44) separated by an air gap. If the light encounters the glass at an angle of 40.00
