The occupational group that inherently in risk of are the healthcare workers. The healthcare workers are a group of people in medical service of the society for medical care, treatment, support and maintaining healthy society. The healthcare workers are a broader group which includes physicians, surgeons, nurses, laboratory technicians, clinical laboratory research workers, first responders, medical social workers, etc. The healthcare workers are at risk all the time of various infections which can be blood borne, airborne, contact transmissible, etc. healthcare workers are at risk of various infections such as Tuberculosis, HIV AIDS, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), etc.

Among all the infections Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is the most efficiently and easily transmissible type of the blood borne viruses that are important in healthcare settings. The hepatitis B virus belongs to hepadnavirus family that primarily affects the body with the functions of the liver by replicating in hepatocytes. The HBV transmission incidence via a needle-stick injury or contaminated needle in one study was approximately 2% with HBV e antigen (HBeAg) and the negative blood associated and 19% with HBeAg-positive blood was found to have evidence of infection. Therefore, healthcare workers are at a serious risk for exposure to HBV from infected patients, and similarly HBV-infected healthcare workers may potentially transmit HBV to patients as carrier of the infection.According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been more than 38,000 HBV infections every year.

However the HBV infection is preventable and can be cured eventually but taking precautions in the fort place by healthcare workers is key to their functioning when in contact of blood-related instruments, articles, clothing, etc. There are Occupational safety and Health Organization guidelines that direct the healthcare worker of infections prevention and control such as OSHA's Blood-borne Pathogens standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) and Personal Protective Equipment standard (29 CFR 1910.132), etc. Therefore, despite being in service of the society the healthcare workers hould take care and adhere to functional occupational and institutional guideline for safety and prevention of infection among them and the community at large.
