1)The Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) is a written
program developed and implemented by the employer which (1) sets
forth procedures, equipment, personal protective equipment, and
work practices that are capable of protecting employees from the
health hazards presented by hazardous
chemicalsused in.
Chemical hygeine plan should include;
- Standard operating procedures
- Criteria to determine and implement specific control measures,
such as engineering controls and personal protective
equipment.
- A requirement that an ongoing program be developed to ensure
that fume hoods and other engineering controls are functioning
properly
- Information and training requirements
- Circumstances under which a particular laboratory function will
require prior approval
- Provisions for medical consultation and medical exams
- Designation of a Chemical Hygiene Officer
- Additional precautions for work with select carcinogens,
reproductive toxins, and extremely toxic substances.
chemical hygiene plan major goals:
Chemical Hygiene Plan describes policies,
procedures, equipment, personal protective
equipment and work practices that are capable of protecting
employees from the health hazards presented by many hazardous
chemicals used in laboratories.
- Provide information to faculty, staff, students and visitors
about health and safety hazards
- Identify and reduce risk from health and safety hazards and
encourage faculty, staff, and students to report hazards
- Provide information and safeguards for the W. M.
2. Safety Data Sheet SDS (formerly known as
MSDS) includes information such as the properties
of each chemical; the physical, health, and
environmental health hazards; protective measures; and
safety precautions for handling, storing, and
transporting the chemical.
The Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) requires chemical
manufacturers, distributors, or importers to provide Safety Data
Sheets to communicate the hazards of hazardous chemical
products.
SDSS should include the appropriate warning information
associated with those hazards
- The hazard classification of the chemical (e.g., flammable
liquid, category)
- Signal word.
- Hazard statement
- Pictograms (the pictograms or hazard symbols may be presented
as graphical reproductions of the symbols in black and white or be
a description of the name of the symbol (e.g., skull and
crossbones, flame).
- Precautionary statement(s).
- Description of any hazards not otherwise classified.
- For a mixture that contains an ingredient(s) with unknown
toxicity, a statement describing how much (percentage) of the
mixture consists of ingredient(s) with unknown acute toxicity.
