c2h5+ lewis structure and formal charge
C2H5:( Lewis Structure):
C2H5 ( neutral no- overall charge) is a free radical.
Its lewis-dot structure will be two horizontal C atoms covalently bonded. One C atom will be single bonded to three H atoms . The other Catom will be bonded to two H atoms and have one electron unpaired.
FORMAL CAHRGE OF C2H5+:
The formal is a technique to identify which resonance structure is the most correct structure.The most correct lewis structure is the structure where the formal charges are evenly distributed throughout the molecule.The sum of all formal charges is equal to the total charge of the molecule.
formulae:
Formal charge = ve -NE - BE / 2
where VE = Valence electrons
NE = non bonding electrons
BE = Bonding electron
Formal charge of 1st carbon is:
As the carbon belongs to 14 group in the periodic table the valence electrof varbon is 4
bonding electrons of carbon = 0
nonbonding electrons of 1st carbon = 8
= 4-8-0/2
= 4-8-0
=-4-0
=-4
formal charge of 2nd carbon
valence electrons = 4
nonbonding electrons = 6
bonding electrons = 0
= 4 - 6 -0 /2
= - 2
finally the formal charge of carbon in C2H5 is = -4 + ( -2 )
= - 6
