Trace the evolution of gender roles among western civilizations from ancient times to the medieval era. What influences the construction of gender norms? What do gender roles tell us about how society develops?
In ancient times, women were no way equal to men, they were always considered to be Inferior. At that time women had no such right for gender equality and were totally dependent over men. They did not work, or had any education.
Whereas, in medieval times, situations got a bit better as women realised the importance of gender equality. Some percentage of women even started working which was a great small step but had to face many difficulties such as, very unequal wage rate.
At this time unmarried women had the right to keep inherent property. Although, didn't have any right to vote.
The gender norms have been basically constructed on the basis of physical strength, temperament of behaviour or nature, strength, weakness etc.
Gender roles tells us that each gender has some specific role which needs to only fulfilled by them but this must not take any evil form or try to take away opportunity from any gender, on the name of their roles. For example, women have to fulfill their duties as mothers and housekeepers but this must not take away their right to work for the fulfillment of their aspirations.
