Question 8: Let’s say an interviewer wants to select 2 people at random of 3. The three individuals are Sally, Joe, John.
Question 9: Please answer the following questions and determine if this represents a discrete random variable or a continuous random variable.
Q - 8
a) Interviewer wants to select 2 people at random from 3.
Total Sample space = 3C2 = 3
Sample space = { (Sam, Joe) , (Sam, John) , (Joe, John)}
b) Probability of each event in the sample space = 1/3
P (Sam, Joe) = 1/3
P(Sam, John) = 1/3
P(Joe, John) = 1/3
c) Probability of selecting Joe in this interview = This can be done in 2 ways {(Sam, Joe) , (Joe, John)}
Probability of selecting Joe in this interview = 2/3
Q-9
a) The number of inches it rains per day in the state of Washington
This is continuous data. Continuous data is quantitative data that can be measured and has an infinite number of possible values within a selected range. The amount of rain that falls on a city in a day can take on any non-negative value on the real number line, therefore it continuous data.
b) The number of times of getting heads after flipping a coin 20 times. Does this represent a discrete or continuous random variable? Why or why not.
Discrete data.
Discrete data is based on counts. Only a finite number of values is possible, and the values cannot be subdivided meaningfully.
