Infection Control Nurse:
The infection control Nurse is the one who specializes in detecting, preventing and controlling of infection outbreaks. Her responsibility is to educate the nurses and other healthcare personnel in the prevention of infection in the healthcare settings. Her duty is to ensure the proper hand washing, proper sanitation, safe disposal of used syringes, waste disposal, and maintaining of clean surroundings within the hospital.
She also overlooks the patients treating with the Hospital-acquired infections or nosocomial infection(SSI, UTI, Bloodstream infection), in the hospital settings. She also notifies the reason for infectious disease, the healthcare personnel dealing directly with the patient, length of stay of the patient in the hospital, type and number of procedures undergone during hospitalization. She also makes report on the antibiotic received, the frequency and the duration. She also in contact with the patient after discharge to rule out of any secondary infection.
As infection control nurse plays a unique role in the improvement of patient standard care. By following, Universal precautions, she is creating a safe environment for the patient. She also protects the nurse and other healthcare personnel who is in contact with patient saliva, sputum, urine, feces, and other fluids by ensuring and educating them to use the personal protective equipment.
She supervises the periodical changes of urinary catheterization, intravenous line and wound dressing. Following of hand washing and aseptic technique during the procedure is the primary precaution technique. She also takes care of neutropenic patient's oral care. It is her responsibility to report to the centers for disease control and prevention if there is an outbreak of infection. She maintains the record of benchmark of HAI's according to the policy.
Thus the infection control nurse is the major position in healthcare who demonstrate the infection control and prevention by applying her knowledge, skills, and leadership in order to protect both the patient and the healthcare professionals. She also plays a key role in protecting the financial condition of the patient by minimizing the length of stay in the hospital and readmission due to infection.
