Question: A ball with mass m and velocity 3v collides with a ball of mass 2m and velocity –v. If the collision is elastic find the final speed of each ball
Mass of the first ball = m
Mass of the second ball = 2m
Initial velocity of the first ball = V1 = 3V
Initial velocity of the second ball = V2 = -V
Final velocity of the first ball = V3
Final velocity of the second ball = V4
The collision is elastic.
Coefficient of restitution = e = 1
By conservation of linear momentum,
We are asked for the final speed of each ball that is the magnitude of velocity of each ball therefore the final answers will be positive.
a) Final speed of the ball with mass m = 2.33V
b) Final speed of the ball with 2m = 1.67V
