The accuracy of a balance will tell you how close a measurement with the balance will agree with the standard value for that measurement.

Checking and rectifying the graduations of any instrument used for making quantitative measurements is known as calibration. During calibration the output of a balance is compared with a standard value.

The accuracy of a balance depends on the calibration process. So it is always advisable to carry out a calibration at the place where the balance is installed.

Calibration requires a standard weight and the balance to be set in the "calibration mode." Many balances contain internal calibration weights that are quite accurate. The internal calibration weight will be different in different balances 100.0000 g ,200.0000 g etc. When the balance is set in the calibration mode by pressing the calibrate button it will show the internal calibration weight of the balance. One cannot calibrate a ‘100.0000 g calibration weight balance with a 200 g standard mass’ and vice versa . A ‘100.0000 g calibration weight balance will be programmed and the software within the scale will be configured only to accept a 100 gram calibration value to store the calibration data within the Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory( EPROM) on the scale’s mother board.

The acceleration due to gravity which will affect the weight of a substance will be different at different places’. For this reason a scale which is calibrated at one place cannot be used in another place. That is the reason why companies don’t market pre-calibrated balances. ,

Also difference in the elevation will affect the barometric pressure which in term will affect the accuracy of the measurement. So it becomes necessary to calibrate an electronic balance when it is taken to an elevated place like the tenth floor before weighing an object. If the internal calibration weight of the balance is 100.0000 g then that value will be displayed when the ‘calibrate’ button is pressed.
