What metals are used in costume jewelry? How are they made to simulate the gold and silver they mimic? Answer in greater than 100 words.
The following metals are used in costume jewelry
1) Pewter : It is metal alloy of Pb (Tin), Cu(Copper), Bi (Bismuth) and Sb (Antimony)
2) Sterling silver: It is alloy of Ag (silver),Cu (copper) now a days metalloid Ge (germenium) is added
3) Gold or Silver plated Brass : Brass is alloy of Cu(Copper) and Zn (Zinc)F
4) Base metals :Base metals are Fe (Iron),Ni (Nickel), Pb (Lead), Zn(Zinc)
5) Crystal, Zirconium dioxide(ZrO2) simulated to diamond
this inexpensive metals are coated with gold or silver by electrolysis process.the thickness of plating is about 2.5 to 20 microns
For silver plating silver rod and the metal (cosider iron jewelry) which is going to be coated placed in silver nitrate solution. Silver rod connected to anode of battery and jewelry connected to cathode end of battery.when electric current is passed through electrolyic cell silver undergoes oxidation Ag+ and will deposited on jewelry. jewelry looks like silver.
Gold plating is done by immersion method is based on displacement reaction where jewelry is immersed in acidic gold complex solution [Au(CN)2]. When this solution is heated about 90oC thin film of gold coated over jewelry.
In that way costume jewelry coated with gold or silver simulate the gold and silver they mimic.
