A dam is inclined at an angle of 30° from the vertical and has
the shape of an isosceles trapezoid 40 ft wide at the top and 20 ft
wide at the bottom and with a slant height of 30 ft. Find the
hydrostatic force on the dam when it is full of water. (Round your
answer to the nearest whole number. Recall that the weight density
of water is 62.5 lb/ft3.)
Hydrostatic force, F = Pressure (P) x Area (A)
given that the inclined angle is 30o
then the height, h = 30 cos30
=26
Pressure when the dam is full, P = hρg= (30 cos30)(62.5)(9.81)
=26x62.5x9.81
P
=15941.25
Area, A = 0.5(40 + 20)(30 cos30)
=0.5x60x26
A =780
Therefore F=PxA
=15941.25x780
=1.243x108
