" Unnecessary noise is the most cruel absue of carewhich can be inflicted on either the sick or well."

- Florence Nightingale

Florence Nightingale also known as " the lady with a lamp" is the first nursing theorist, the founder of educated and scientific nursing, whose notes became basis for basis for nursing practice and research. One of her theory was Environmental theory that includes the restoration of usual health status of clients in delivery of health care.

This theory states that the clients environment effects the clients health. It is responsibility of a nurse to utilize the clients environment to restore their normal health by taking initiative in configuring the environment settings appropriate for gradual restoration of health. The environmental factors effecting health includes pure air, pure water, cleanliness, adequate lighting, proper drainage. Deficiency in any of this may lead to diminshed health status.

Nightingale's environmental theory was mainly applied during the Crimean war, a time when there was poor sanitation, widespread infectious diseases. She worked along with her colleagues to serve the injured soldiers attending to their immediate needs. She also emphasised on quiet and calm environment in treating clients. These findings are applied still today. The spread of many communicable have reduced with the efforts made to improve the environment of the client leading to progressive change in clients health status and the health delivery system.

Nightingale also laid a foundation to the nursing ethics which is a very significant issue when dealing with a client. Code of ethics involves certain factors that indicates the human behaviour of nurse towards her client. A nurse who owns a good morale and conduct, simplys the task of nursing and brings many solutions to problems related to healthcare.

One of the major task faced by current healthcare system is achieving client satisfaction.A client who is welcomed warmly with a smiling face, spoken with tender words will surely put his/her trust on the care provider. The helps the care provider to develop a good rapport with the client, to understand their immediate needs, to act as an advocate for them at times and the client would also frequently bring their concerns to them. With an adequate code of conduct and ethically dealing the client issues, will help to develop a healthy interpersonal relationship and thereby improving the quality of care.
