a.) In families of 4 offspring, what is the probability of finding the oldest and youngest offspring to both be female?

(As you calculate your response, keep variable rounded at 4 decimal places, provide your answer as a percentage with 2 decimal places, no percentage sign needed(%) i.e., 45.21)

b.) Chestnut, Palomino, and Cremello coat coloring is horses is determined by a partial or incomplete dominant mode of inheritance. Chestnut (CC) and cremello (CCrCCr)

animals have a homozygous genotype, and palomino coat coloring is a result from a heterozygous genotype (CCCr)

Two palomino horses have created 3 offspring. What is the chance that these 3 offspring result in 1 of each color (1 chestnut, 1 cremello, and 1 palomino) colts?

(As you calculate your response, keep variable rounded at 4 decimal places, provide your answer as a percentage with 2 decimal places, no percentage sign needed(%)i.e., 45.21)

Solutions

Expert Solution

a) The total number of possibilities for the 4 offsprings to be either male or female is

= 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 = 16

The total number of cases in which the youngest and the oldest offspring is female is

= 1 * 2 * 2 * 1 = 4

The probability of finding the oldest and the youngest offsprings to both be female is

= 4/16 = 1/4

The required percentage is = 1/4 * 100 = 25 (answer)

b) The genotype of a Palomino horse is .

The 4 possible genotypes for the offsprings of two Palomino horses are

i)   - Chestnut

ii) - Palomino

iii) - Palomino

iv) - Cremello

The probability that an offspring will be Chesnut is = 1/4

The probability that an offspring will be Palomino is = 2/4

The probability that an offspring will be Cremello is = 1/4

The probability that the 3 offsprings result in 1 of each color is

The required percentage is = 18.75

You are Joe Campbell, oldest son in the Campbell and Lessing families. You have been an integral part of running the family business for ten years. Your dad and mom, James and Sue, rely on you to run the cattle operation – which is a cash cow (you love that joke) for the family business. The cow?calf operation brings in around $70,000 per year for 150 head of cattle and 1500 head of stocker cattle. Realistically you think that you...
