There is more advantages of taking 8 hr shifts for nurses. And studies stated that patients are also found of nurses who is in shift less than 11 hours.
Some of the advantages of taking 8 hour shift is as follows:
a)   Patient satisfaction-
Patients are more satisfied with nurses working in less than 11 hour shift than that of more than 12 hour shift.
b)   Less mistakes or errors-
Of course nursing is challenging career. In the aspect of mental, physical , and emotional . Nurses facing stress related to their workload. So there is more chance of making mistakes in long term shift than that of short term shift.
c)   Less burnout-
Nurses working for 12 hours or more facing 2 times or more burnout that of 8 hour shift . This will make them dissatisfied with their job.
d)   Less on the job injuries-
Nurses who are working in 12 or more hours are more likely to have injuries during procedures or while handling instruments.

Nurses working for 12 hours continuously will prone to physical and emotional disturbances. They have sleep disturbances which may mentally irritate them leads to dissatisfied with their job .
Nurses in long term shift may suffer from health issues like musculoskeletal diseases, gastric problems, sleep disturbances etc conditions. .

For a long term shift nurses will get 3 days leave but when it is 8 hour shift will not give off days but nurses can maintain health issues because of less workload. This will make them satisfied with their work and indirectly there is less chance of mistakes by them during the job and daily the same nurse can take care of same patient and this makes patients also satisfied with treatment.
