How much energy is required to melt a 170 g lead cube at 328 ∘C?

Express your answer with the appropriate units.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Amount of enery required to change the state of 1 kilogram of a substance is called its specific latent heat.

Amount of energy needed can be calculated by this equation.

Energy(J) = Specific latent heat (J/Kg) * mass (Kg)

The melting point temperatures and latent heat of melting of some substances is shown below.

From this table, let us look at Lead.

At 3280C, i.e., at the melting point temperature of lead, its specific latent heat is 23KJ/Kg

Given mass of lead = 170 g

= 170 *10-3 Kg

Now, Energy required to melt = specific latent heat * mass

= (23 * 103)J/Kg * (170 * 10-3)Kg

= 3910 J

Therefore, the energy required to melt a 170 g lead cube at 3280C is 3910 Joules.
