Concept: Acid Balance
1. Related concepts (explain) – In this section, discuss how other concepts connect to and are affected by the main concept.
a. Think about and explain how alterations in the main concept would affect other concepts
b. Think about and explain how alterations in other concepts would affect the main concept
c. Example – main concept of acid base balance; if acid base balance is altered/impaired what would be the impact on other concepts such as fluid and electrolytes, gas exchange, or glucose and hormone regulation OR if there is an alteration in fluid and electrolytes, gas exchange, or glucose and hormone regulation what would be the impact on acid base balance
2. Related exemplars – In this section, list exemplars (examples) of disorders related ONLY to the main concept. (please do not include exemplars of the other concepts discussed in related concepts section)
a. Example – main concept of acid base balance; exemplars may include metabolic acidosis or respiratory alkalosis
3. Related Assessments – In this section, explain assessments needed to find and/or rule out alterations with the main concept and provide rationale
a. Example – main concept of acid base balance; skin color and temperature (warm/flushed with metabolic acidosis and pale/cyanotic with respiratory acidosis), LOC
4. Related Lab & Diagnostic Tests – In this section, explain labs and/or diagnostic tests needed to find and/or rule out alterations with the main concept and provide rationalea. Example – main concept of acid base balance; ABG, CMP, anion gap, EKG
5. Related Nursing Interventions – In this section, explain nursing interventions needed to care for patients with alterations to the main concept and provide rationale
a. Example – main concept of acid base balance; restore fluid and electrolyte balance, pulmonary hygiene as needed including supplemental oxygen or paced breathing
6. Related Medication – In this section, explain medications expected to be administered to treat or prevent alterations in the main concept and provide rationale
a. Example – main concept of acid base balance; IV fluids, oxygen, potassium chloride, sodium bicarbonate
7. Potential Complications – In this section, explain problems that could occur if alterations in the main concept are not addressed/treated and provide rationalea. Example – main concept of acid base balance; cardiac dysrhythmias or seizure
8. Collaborative Goals – In this section, explain what other departments/ancillary staff may be needed to treat patients who have or are at risk for alterations with the main concept and provide rationale
a. Example – main concept of acid-base balance; Respiratory Therapy to help address gas exchange and breathing needs, Pharmacy to review medications to look for possible causes of alteration.

3. Related Assessment for comdicondi with physiological parameters
Respiratory acidosis is :
PaCO3 increases above 40 mmHg
HCO3 level tends to increase
Respiratory alkalosis is :
Condition where the CO2 tension in arterial blood is below
normal
range of 31-42 mm of Hg (4.1-5.6 k Pa)
