Suspension cultures of Panax ginseng plant cells are used to produce ginseng biomass for the health tonic market. The cells are grown in batch culture in a 2500-litre stirred bioreactor operated at 25 C and 1 atm pressure. Over a period of 12 days, 5.5x10^6 litres of air at 25'C and 1 atm are pumped into the reactor; off-gas containing 5.1x10^5 litres of oxygen leaves the vessel over the same period. About 135 kg of water is lost by evaporation during the culture. Estimate the cooling requirements, in megajoules per day
Several factor involved in this process, in the large metallic vessel need heating along with proper regulation of temperature for effective heat need of the container (organisms) in the beginning. At the same time it is also pertinent to cool down the content of the vessel and warranted cooling capacity. Please note that it is temperature is also related with the ambient pressure and reduced temperature is a trait of lower pressure, which can be counted as ambient pressure (one or lower than 1 atmosphere pressure).
FOR ENERGY CALCULATION:
Since specific gravity is 1, so 135 Kg would be equal to 135 liter and lets convert litre to cm2
1 litre is equal to 100 cm2, 5 litre = 292 cm2 and 135 L will produce ~2631.616 cm2
(Its tricky and not simple multiplication through numbers)
Cal/cm2= 1 cal or 4.19 Jules or 4.19 x 10-6 MJules
Therefore 2631.616 cm2= 2631.616 x 4.19=
11026.47 x10-6 Mega Jules per day
