Suspension cultures of Panax ginseng plant cells are used to produce ginseng biomass for the health tonic market. The cells are grown in batch culture in a 2500-litre stirred bioreactor operated at 25 C and 1 atm pressure. Over a period of 12 days, 5.5x10^6 litres of air at 25'C and 1 atm are pumped into the reactor; off-gas containing 5.1x10^5 litres of oxygen leaves the vessel over the same period. About 135 kg of water is lost by evaporation during the culture. Estimate the cooling requirements, in megajoules per day

Solutions

Expert Solution

Several factor involved in this process, in the large metallic vessel need heating along with proper regulation of temperature for effective heat need of the container (organisms) in the beginning. At the same time it is also pertinent to cool down the content of the vessel and warranted cooling capacity. Please note that it is temperature is also related with the ambient pressure and reduced temperature is a trait of lower pressure, which can be counted as ambient pressure (one or lower than 1 atmosphere pressure).

FOR ENERGY CALCULATION:

Since specific gravity is 1, so 135 Kg would be equal to 135 liter and lets convert litre to cm2

1 litre is equal to 100 cm2, 5 litre = 292 cm2 and 135 L will produce ~2631.616 cm2

(Its tricky and not simple multiplication through numbers)

Cal/cm2= 1 cal or 4.19 Jules or 4.19 x 10-6 MJules

Therefore 2631.616 cm2= 2631.616 x 4.19=

11026.47 x10-6 Mega Jules per day

Plant cells are different from animal cells in several ways. All plant cells have a cell wall during their entire existence. The cell wall has many different functions in different cell types. Compare and contrast between the two types of plant cell walls as to their chemical make up, shape, when they are formed, and morphological properties. Include all chemical components in the cell wall we discussed during lecture. Draw two figures showing how each of these cell walls are...

When O2 is added to an anaerobic suspension of cells consuming glucose at a high rate, the rate of glucose consumption drops significantly as the O2 is consumed; the accumulation of lactate also ceases. First observed by Louis Pasteur in the 1860s, this effect is characteristic of most cells capable of aerobic and anaerobic metabolism. a) Why does lactate cease to accumulate upon addition of O2? b) Why does the rate of glucose consumption decrease? c) What is the mechanistic...

Assume that one unit of plant and equipment is used to produce one unit of output, and that it costs GHc per period to hire this plant. Once installed, it costs GHc period to operate 1 unit of plant to produce 1 unit of output.
