In which of the following examples would it be useful to use a two-dimensional PDF like the one used in the basketball example in class? (Select all that apply)

a) When looking at the geographical locations of all the universities across India

b) When looking at the ranking of a basketball team across time

c) When looking at the points where a tennis player’s ball bounced during a tennis match

d) When measuring the effects of a medicine on children

Solutions

Expert Solution

It would be useful to use a two-dimensional PDf in the following examples:

a). When looking at the geographical locations of all the universities across India because while looking at the geographical locations we needs two coordinates that is latitude and longitude , thus forming a two dimensional PDF.

c). When looking at the points where a tennis player’s ball bounced during a tennis match because for the location of points where tennis ball bounced we need two axes that is X-axis (along horizontal of board) and Y-axis (along vertical of board), thus forming a two dimensional PDF.

whereas in the other two examples we have only one-dimensional PDF because:

  • When looking at the ranking of a basketball team across time, we have only one-dimensional array that is of ranking and not of time because time is going to increase no matter what and,
  • When measuring the effects of a medicine on children, we have a data set of only one catergorical variable thats is whether the medicine is affecting or not.
