Compute the percent ionic character of the interatomic bonds for the SiC compound. Are you suprised by this result? Why or why not?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Xc = 2.5               Xsi= 1.8

                                                                      = 1 - [exp -(2.5-1.8)2/4] x 100

                                                                      = 1 - 0.8847 x100

                                                                           = 0.1153 x100

                                                                             = 11.53% ionic character

It is not surprising because electronegativity difference between C and Si is not much. Hence it is expected only
