EJ is a 14-year-old male who currently resides at a behavioral health resident treatment facility. He has been diagnosed with obesity and hyperlipidemia, most likely due to side effects from the medications he is taking for bipolar disorder. The registered dietitian has been asked to speak with EJ about his new diet order for a low-fat diet and to provide suggestions to EJ’s family. EJ is expected to return home next month. His family has been participating in family counseling weekly with EJ while he has been at the facility. Currently EJ is 195 pounds and 70 inches tall. EJ’s mother reports that EJ typically eats at fast-food restaurants after school three or four days a week. His intake of fruits and vegetables has only been 1-2 daily while at the facility, and his mother indicates this is more than he eats at home. When EJ does drink milk, it’s usually whole milk. EJ’s family is very busy, and often EJ and his two older siblings prepare their own dinner.

Questions:

1. What is EJ’s BMI? How does this classify his weight at this time?

2. What dietary recommendations do you have, specific to EJ’s situation, that can help him improve his nutritional intake and reduce his fat consumption?

3. What guidelines do you need to keep in mind as you provide nutrition education and counseling to adolescents?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ans:-1.) BMI means body mass index this can be expressed as weight of a person in kilogram divide by height of that person in meter square

BMI=weight(kg)/height (m2)

Firstly ,we have to convert the units pounds to kg

Inches to m

1pound=0.454kg

So, 195pounds=88.45kg

And 1inch =0.025

So,70inches=1.77

So according to formula 88.45/(1.77)2=28.26kg/m2

  • According to classification of BMI a person is considered as normal when his body mass index comes in between 18.5-24.9kg/m2
  • Underweight when below 18.5kg/m2
  • Over weight =25-29.9kg/m2
  • obese= >30kg/m2

So according to EJ's BMI she comes in overweight category as her BMI was 28.26kg/m2

Ans:-2.)For EJ's situation I 'll recommend a more fiberous diet rather then fast food to improve his condition of hyperlipidemia he must add more and more fruit juices and green leafy vegetables, sprouts and if he likes to drink milk he can use a low fat milk only by changing his diet it will be difficult for him he must start doing some exercises ,yoga that will help him to reduce his weight .

Ans:-3) Adolescent age is a growing age of people both physically and mentally this is a period in which a person enters in his adulthood, both physical and hormonal changes occur in a person at the same time .

So we must keep in mind the requirements of protein for physical and muscular growth of that person and requirement of green vegetables and fruits for his health and to improve his immunity and heamoglbin and we must add milk for bony growth of that child.
