When Breaking Down Standardized Assessment Scores
Does it make sense why we convert raw scores to standard scores? How does this help us make sense of scores? Discuss how this applies to assessment tools that you have reviewed in counseling.
Ans:- We convert raw scores to standard scores to get an idea if the individual score is above or below mean and how far above or below mean. Secondly, it allows us to make a comparison between two different marks in different exams.
For example :- You have a score of 55 out of 100 and how good you are going to feel about it. You won't be feeling good because you dont know how well the other students did. But if you were told that your standard z score is 2. Then you know that your score is among top 2.5% of the students and the 97.5% of the students scored less than you.
Similarly you were told that you marks in English is 60 and in Maths is 250. You cant compare these two numbers as the total marks for both the papers were different. But lets say you were told that your standard z score in English is 1 and in Maths is 0 which means that your marks in english is among top 16% and in maths it's among top 50%.
