explain levels of prevention and health promotion
It is categorised into 4 levels
1. Primordial level- In this prevention of development of risk factors in a population is done.
This is achieved by individual and mass education through various health programs.
Example- Members with family history of diabetes or hypertension.. there are high chances.. child may also getting that.. so to prevent this life style modifications can be done like regular excercise, Porper nutrition, cessation of smoking.
2. Primary level- This type of prevention is implemented before there is occurance of any disease or injury..
So This is mainly focused on High risk people..
Intent is to reduce or eliminate the risk factors so that it prevents transmission.
Example- controlling disease like typhoid, malaria, Tuberculosis,etc by raising the living standards.
This can be achieved by Two methods..
a. Health promotion- achieved by health education, environmental modification, nutritional guidance.
b. Specific protection- achieved by immunization, avoidance of the allergen, etc.
3. Secondary level- This is implemented when disease has occurred but before it is symptomatic.
This is mainly focused in people who has disease which is early or asymptomatic.
Intent is Early detection through screening programs and treatment of those patients.
Example- Identifying people with hypertension or cancer in early stages and treating them reduce complications and mortality rates.
4. Tertiary level- This is implemented after disease or any injury has occurred..
This is focused in people with established disease..
Intent is to prevent mortality and morbidity once disease has been established.
This can be achieved by disability inhibition and rehabilitation.
Example- Reconstructive surgery in leprosy patients.
