Light with a wavelength of 616 nm passes through a slit 7.74 μm wide and falls on a screen 1.90 m away.

Q : Find the linear distance on the screen from the central bright fringe to the first bright fringe above it.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Distanced from source to screen D = 1.90 m,

Wavelength of light used λ =616 nm
                                       = 616 x 10-9 m and
Slit width d = 7.74 μm
                  = 7.74 x 10-6 m.

Condition for 1 st bright fringe d sinθ = 1.5λ

For small angles sin θ= y / D

From this d y / D = 1.5 λ

Required linear distance y = 1.5 λD / d

                                            = 1.5(616 * 10-9 m)(1.90 m)/( 7.74 * 10-6 m.)

                                            = 0.22682 m

                                             = 22.68 cm
