1. A 50-year-old Asian man with a diagnosis of congestive heart failure was referred for home care services after being hospitalized for surgery. The nurse had her first home visit to the patient. He is living with his wife and three sons. The nurse asked him about his medication and the main current problem. Then, she asked about the level of pain. He responded in negative way by saying “YES”. In the light of this situation, please describe the transcultural principles that the home visit nurse should follow
.Introduce the patient and maintain a mutual respectful relationship.
.Dont use idioms and slangs it may lead to misunderstanding.
.The level of pain must be assessed with a visual analog scale or any other ways, otherwise the exact level of pain understanding may be difficult.
.Accept individual differences and give respect to the patient.
.Nonverbal communications like facial expressions, body posture and eye behaviours have lots of meaning. So dont use this.
.Patting the head is considered as friendly in americans but as serious insult for Asians. So try to understand the cultural behaviours of Asians.
.Touching provides warmth and is a way of healing. So give psychological support.
.Give proper health education in a way acceptable to their culture, ie, culturally competent care.
.Maintain personal space requirements while talking with a person.
.Always be polite and accept his feelings.
