Mary is going to cleanse her gut. She is thinking of using laxatives and enemas every other week. What reasons would you give her to steer clear of the regime? What are some possible harmful effects?
Excessive use of laxatives and enemas could pose lot of side effects in an individual. Laxatives are used to cleanse gut and treat constipation when things like fibre, juices etc are not working. Enemas administer fluid or gas via injections in rectum to expel the contents out.
Laxatives, if used excessively, leads to electrolyte disbalances, loss of useful minerals from the body. It can lead to bloody faeces, cramps and pain. This may lead to dehydration and kidney damage in the long term.
Enemas, though generally safe, should be administered carefully. Incorrect placement leads to damage of rectal tissue. If the device used isn't sterile, it may lead to bacterial or fungal infections. Overuse may lead to diluted blood with less salts, a condition called hypnoatremia.
Taking into account the ptential harmful effects of laxatives and enemas, Mary should consult with an expert to find other alternatives in cleansing the gut. And if still the need arises, she should get proper prescription of dosage with ample breaks.
