how would you make a 50 ml of a 10% acetic acid solution from a 30% acetic acid solution? (i.e., what volume of 30% stock solution and what volume of water would you use?)

Solutions

Expert Solution

According to law of dilution   MV = M'V'

Where M = Molarity of stock = 30 % solution

V = Volume of the stock = ?

M' = Molarity of dilute solution = 10 % solution

V' = Volume of the dilute solution = 50 mL

Plug the values we get , V = ( M'V' ) / M

                                       = ( 10 x 50 ) / 30

                                       = 16.7 mL

Therefore the volume of stock solution taken is 16.7 mL

Also the volume of water added is = total volume of dilute solution - volume of stock solution taken

                                                 = 50 - 16.7

                                                 = 33.3 mL

So take 16.7 mL of the stock solution in a vessel & add 33.3 mL of distilled water to it we get required solution
