27. Oomycetes, as the name suggests (myc- = fungus), looks like fungi; however, they are not. What characteristics do they have in common with fungus? What do they have in difference?
Ans. Oomycetes is a also called "Water molds". They are pathogenic and cause disease such as seedling blights, foliar blights, damping-off, root rots, and downy mildews.
The Similarities between Oomycetes and Fungi are :
Oomycetes and Fungi |
Both have heterotrophic mode of nutrition |
Both obtains nutrition from absorption |
Dont have chlorophyll and thus cant do photosynthesis |
Cell having cell wall (chemical nature varies) |
Both produces spores as mode of reproduction |
Differences Between Oomycetes and Fungi
:
Oomycetes | Fungi |
Have aseptate and coenocytic tubular hyphae | Either single cell or septate hyphae, with having one or more nuclei per cell |
Vegetative phase diploid, except of transient haploid nuclei in gametangia. | Typically dikaryotic or haploid, often with semi stable or stable diploid stage. |
No dikaryotic phase. | Have dikaryotic phase in higher groups. |
No toxic metabolites | Presence of toxic metabolites, which are aromatic, heterocyclic components or proteins |
Produces oospores during reproduction | Doesnt produce oospores. But other types of spores are formed for reproduction. |
Major energy reserve is Mycolaminarin | Glycogen |
Have mitochondria with tubular cristae | Flattened cristae |
