2.5G is a generation of technology which is arrived after 2G technology and before 3G technology. It is an extension of 2G technology that means an advantages are added to 2G technology.

  • 2G technology is about digital encryption of phone conversations.
  • In this technology text message services is introduced.
  • The bandwidth is increased than 1G technology.
  • And the data speed is introduced in 2G which supports only for voice services and text messages.

After 2G developed, the 2.5G technology is evolved which brings some new features to the 2G technology. This 2.5G technology is a middle technology of 2G and 3G.. This 2.5G technology is an extension of new features to the existing 2G technology. The Technologies arrived in 2.5G are following as :

  • The new feature of 2.5G technology provides the service like sending pictures and short videos through multimedia messages (MMS).
  • It increases the data speed more than the 2G technology provide.
  • The signals bandwidth is also increased to support more users.
  • 2.5G technology supports web browsing but it is slower.
  • In 2.5G technology , GPRS is introduced which means General Packet Radio Service which is a network used for communication. This network supports high speed of data transmission.
  • In this 2.5G technology, packet-switched network is introduced to send multimedia content from one mobile to other mobile.

Therefore, 2.5G Technologies as defined above are used in cellular communications.
