Give three examples of linguistic problems that companies have faced during marketing in global markets and describe how these problems could have been avoided.
The linguistic problems that companies have faced during marketing in global markets. Three examples are:
· Chevrolet’s Chevy Nova is one of the car model manufactured by Chevrolet. Chevrolet has its strong presence in the global market however it was a great failure in Spain because Nova in Spanish has the meaning “unable to walk”. Hence, Chevrolet was unable to sell as expected in countries that had Spanish as its main language.
· Electrolux, is a Scandinavian company and its objective was to promote vacuum cleaners in America. Its slogan “Suck like an Electrolux” was a great insult to the Americans because the word …s refers to a bad word.
· Powergen Italia is an Italian company that manufactures industrial batteries that was trying to expand to the countries where English was a major language. They created a new website for its online presence. Its domain name was powergenitalia. This was totally mistaken by the English speaking people and they ridiculed the company. Later, the company changed its domain name to batterychargerpowergen.
