Expert Solution

There are four reading styles, which are as follows:

  • Skimming: this is the process in which the person might just read the material to obtain a gist. It would help a person to know what the text is about and this helps them to know the text on a basic level.
  • Scanning: this is the style in which the individual would just gaze their eyes so that they would look across the pictures and text to obtain a simple information piece.
  • Intensive: this process is more time consuming as compared to skimming or scanning. This would help in retention of information, along with gaining knowledge and retention for longer periods.
  • Extensive: this is the form of reading in which reading is only for pleasure. There would be fluid decoding as well as text assimilation for the content that is presented.

The best way to obtain information is through a mixture of intensive and skimming process. This would allow the person to obtain proper information along with gaining proper knowledge. This information could especially be applied while revising for the last time before an examination. Where, knowledge has already been gained through intensive reading, followed by a revision through skimming.
