The Practice or principle of basing options and actions on reason and knowledge rather than on religious belief or emotional response is called as scientific rationalism.Empiricism is a theory that states that knowledge comes only or primarily from sensory experience.Earlier  knowledge of medicine was based on Observation and experience and not on scientific knowledge.That is the starting of pharmacy profession.
