You've come to the time of year to evaluate your employees. One of your employees, George, is somewhat difficult to evaluate. He seemingly performs his job well and accomplishes everything you assign him. He is also active in organizing the company bowling league and everyone seems to like him as a co-worker because he is very likable. However, he does spend quite a bit of time each day wandering the offices talking about other people's business behind their backs. As his manager, what specific aspects of work performance would you discuss in George's performance evaluation? What aspect of this performance is particularly good for the organization and why?

Solutions

Expert Solution

As George's manager, the specific aspects of work performance I would consider during his performance evaluation are:

  • Quality of Work. The overall quality of his work within the organization.
  • Degree of achievement of set targets. To check whether he meets the set daily targets.
  • Knowledge and efficiency. To test his knowledge pertaining to his job position and the company and to see how effectively and efficiently he gets work done.
  • Employee engagement. To assess to what extent he is engaged in the working of the organization and its activities.
  • Risk management and troubleshooting. To assess how he reacts under pressurized work environments when there is a threatening risk and to assess how he would tackle it.
  • Communication. To check how effectively he communicates with his peers, subordinates and supervisors.
  • Compliance with ethical values. Since there is a concern about his compliance with the ethical conduct of the organization, the degree of his compliance with it should be assessed.
  • Professionalism. Since there is a concern about his professional behaviour, it would be productive to evaluate the degree of professionalism he exhibits in the work environment.

The aspects of George's performance evaluation that will be particularly good for the organization are - Quality of work, Degree of achievement of set targets, Knowledge and efficiency, and Employee engagement. Though George has character flaws, he has proven to be a good and valuable employee for the organization by performing his job well and accomplishing his targets. He is also engaged in the organization's working and activities by taking an active participation in organizing company sports competitions.
