1) How are the Greek gods depicted in the various myths? What personalities, attitudes and traits do they exhibit?
2) How did the Greeks describe Creation, the birth of the gods, and the Great Flood? How are these myths similar/ different to the Creation and Flood stories in Genesis?
3) What elements in the myths of Demeter and Orpheus and Eurydice seem to allude to the concept of life after death?
4) How are the stories of Perseus and Bellerophon similar/different? What attributes do Greek heroes have in common?
1. Aphrodite is a greek goddess who is usually depicted as naked or semi nude beautiful woman . She symbolises roses , myrtle, scallop shell. The ones which symbolises her sacred animals are sparrows and doves . She got married to Hephaestus , having no children. There were many lovers in her life.
Apollo : He is a god of music, knowledge , prophecy , archery , manly beauty . He uses a bow and arrow. He is picturised as someone to be young, handsome, athetic , beardless, etc. In Myths , he is considered to be a cruel and destructive . Love affairs seemed not to be happy.
God's sacred animals are : python, swans , roe deer.
2) According to Greeks , creation meant to represent the universal beginning of the human language .
A stone age religion was dominated / ruled by female great goddess , who was replaced by a male dominated Indo - European hierarchy which was proposed for Greece . The origin of god took place by practicing religious activities , and cult practices.
There were three type of floods. They are :
a) Flood of Ogyges.
b) Flood of Deucalion
c) Flood of Dardanus
Two ages concluded the flood:
Ogyges ended the silver age . And the Deucalion ended the First Bronze Age .
3) Earth , agriculture and fertility : Demeter
Wheat was considered to be the sacred plant of Demeter .
Orpheus was a poet as well as musician who went to the underworld to retrieve his dead wife Eurydice.
His wife , Eurydice died because of a fatal snake bite.
4. Yes , they were similar .
a) Changing the world through some sort of invention/discovery .
b) Discovering fire, agriculture , religion , law ,traditions , songs , etc.
c) Usually considered to be the true legend of a ruling dynasty.
d) Having traits like bravery and strength is also common among them .
e) Having a sense of Patience
f) Caring
g) Humility
h) They are always in favour of gods
i) They are abandoned at birth for a long period of time .
j) Having an unusual concept of birth .
