During an icy winter day two cars collide on a frictionless
road. Car 2 is 4 times the mass of car 1. Before the collision, car
2 is moving to the left at a speed of v0 and car 1 is moving to the
right at twice that speed, 2v0 . After the collision car 2 keeps
going to the left but at a quarter of its initial speed, 1 4v0 . a
Find the speed of car 1 immediately after the collision. (Your
answer will be in terms of v0.) b At what height did car 2 have to
be so that if it slid down the frictionless hill from rest at A its
speed at the bottom of the hill was v0 = 21.6 km/hr? You must use
good technique! For any application of energy or momentum you must
define the system. Clearly set up the problem starting from a
standard equation. Be sure to state the physics, to what and why it
applies.
