Duty ethics suggests that an act would be considered ethical if it fulfils duty without worrying about the consequences and it’s from here, Kant derives his categorical imperatives. First categorical imperative suggests that one should act to a maxim that it becomes a universal law which others would follow. This would mean that one shouldn’t make false promises because it would deceive another person and it cannot become a universal law. If everyone starts making false promises, the world would become a place in which people would view others without any trust. Aristotle’s virtue ethics emphasizes on one’s character because good people would always engage in good actions thus, they wouldn’t engage in making false promises. In terms of telling the truth, he suggests that the mean is telling the truth or making real promises while the deficiency is self-depreciation and the excess is boastfulness. Thus, he suggests that virtuous people would always tell the truth and wouldn’t make false promises.
