Wren is shown to be a hot headed male child who is shown to have a disposition of mindless anger. He seems to be driven to fight with anyone over minial things, and has been wanting to join the survey corps and boasts about having the strength and courage.
Qualities of heroism are associated with having quick reflex and the postulate of not being afraid. But, eren, defies the postulate ahem he sees his mother crushed under the roof, and tries to get her out of the rubble while she says run, to which eren responds neither with a yes nor with a no, but with a, "Yes, I want to runaway."
He tries to get his mother out of the rubble for its.clear he loves her dearly, but we can see in split second that when faced with reality, he knows what his prioriries are not to stay and fight, but to get his mother and run.
We can depict Hannes as Erens ID, one that acts out of the animalistic instinct of survival, and as one split second screen decision shows that Wren might have changed his mind about joining the corps, the other moment, where his mother is eaten by the Titan, shows the immediate shift and the dichotomy of his earlier stance of joining being reinstated, and his earlier mindless aggressive demeanor getting a purpose.
