Joseph Lister is considered ‘Father of Modern Day Surgery’. What was his contribution to science, which made surgical procedures safer than before?

Joseph lister is also called as the "Father of antiseptic surgery".He introduced the antiseptic process during surgery which reduced the post operative deaths in 1800.In 1840s and after, there were a great number of deaths associated with child birth and surgery .The alarming rate of "ward fever" made Joseph lister to findout the reason .

Major contributions include:

  • He introduced the use of antiseptic before surgery.
  • He introduced Antiseptic hand wash by surgeons before surgery to prevent infection.(Carbolic acid was used initially).
  • He introduced sterilize of surgical instruments used or surgery to prevent infections(Surgical instruments are dipped or sprayed with carbolic acid initially to prevent infections)
  • He introduced the surgical environment sterilization with carbolic acid spraying in the operation room environment prior surgery to reduce infections .
  • He introduced that sterilized materials can be left inside human body .Thereafter  started with metals pins and wires left inside the body for fracture fixation.
  • Lister started using sterilized catgut for internals suturing and gets absorbed with out infection.
