The terms 'Standard' and 'Recommended Practices' (SARPs)in aviation are used by International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
The Standards are specifications containing certain characteristics like physical characteristics, configuration, material, performance, personnel or procedure which are necessary for the uniform application of the said standard in order to ensure safety and/or efficiency of international air navigation.
Recommended Practices are also specifications that contain certain characteristics as mentioned which are necessary for their application and highly desirable, but they are not mandatory, unlike standards; in order to ensure safety and/or efficiency of international air navigation.
Once a SARP has been proposed it is the duty of each memebr state to implement through its on domestic arrangement. It is the responsibility of the every member state to keep its own regulations uniform to the greatest possible extent with the SARPs promulgated by the ICAO.If it is impractical to cmply with the practices of the SARPs, the council of the each member state has to notify the ICAO and provide the details of the difference between its own practices and those established by the SARPs.
