I have certain operating conditions (pressure and temperature) given for a distillation column. Why are these conditions used? If there is a change in the operating conditions, is there an affect on the yield?
a) The distillation column is basically working on the principle of relative volatility. we want to separate mixtures of the different component having different relative volatility. As a rule of thumb, the temperature at the bottom is higher than the temperature at the top.
The temperature at the bottom is just lower than a boiling point of heavier component because we want heavy component remains in the liquid state and at the top of the column the temperature is just higher than lightest component. because we want the less volatile component to remain in the vapor phase. So the temperature inside the distillation column plays a significant role in the distribution of the product.
Similarly, lower the pressure there will be more separation of the component. some time vacuum is used so that lighter component evaporate faster.
So separation also depends on a pressure.
In other term knowing temperature and pressure, the degree of freedom is reduced. (-2)
(b) Yes yield of a component is dependent on temperature and pressure as discussed above.
