Case study
Sneha is a new employee from India. She speaks English well, but
this is not her first language. Sneha has arthritis in her left
wrist. She writes with her right hand so this does not hinder her
writing ability. She uses a high-context conflict style. You ask her
if she would like to come to a staff dinner to celebrate the 5th
anniversary and she says that she is not sure about
it.
2.1) Research Indian
culture. What might some of Sneha's cultural differences be? Whom
do you contact to obtain training about understanding diverse
cultural needs?
2.2) You heard one of
your colleagues refusing to work with Sneha because of her
disability. What strategy would you use to ensure you are working
with awareness and sensitivity?
2.3) What are some
ways to reflect on practices regarding behaviours that were used to
deal with a situation involving other team members?
2.4) List specific
actions to use to enable best possible communications for a new
family from a non-English speaking country attending your service.
What specific verbal and non-verbal strategies could be
used
1) India is a country of vast cultures, first language of Indians is hindi, there is a huge cultural difference between Indian and that of any other county, like eating and drinking habits, there attire, there customs & rituals,
For having knowledge of any culture, we need to spend time with the people following that culture, it's the only and practical way of having knowledge about that, although we can have knowledge via internet as well but it won't be that efficacious, or that practical
2) Someone from other culture is there as colleague in your office, she being a female and again with some disability, she is already very alone out there, and if anyone denies to work rith her due to her med. Condition is like very inhuman thing.
For such things you should have your meeting either official or non-official tell everyone about the disability and it's consequences & appeal everyone to help her wherever neededand possible, so that her survival at new place is eased as well.
3) Involving some problem with other team members, there are various ways to help them, like asking them about their condition and work again and again, help them in whatever situation and in whatever way it's possible, staying humble is necessary, keep your tounge soft and try to deal the person in there language, and do ask about treatment going on and guide if you know some better medical facility
4) Try to interact them, in their language, either wrong or right but at least give it a try, arrange the food they like to eat for them , try to wear attire which belongs to them, play some music of there first language, such things share a great emotions, and makes people comfortable
