a 1.015-g sample of KHP (204.23 g/mol) is dissolved in water and tirated with 24.55 mL of NaOH solution to a phenolphthalein endpoint. Calculate the molarity of the NaOH solution.
KHP is potassium hydrogen phthalate is an acidic compound. Its molar mass is 204.23 g/mol and molecular formula is C8H5KO4.
KHC8H4O4 +
NaOH ----->
KNaC8H4O4 +
H2O
Moles of KHP = 1.015 gm KHP * 1 mol KHP / 204.23 g/mol KHP
= 0.00496 moles = 0.005 moles of KHP
Moles of NaOH = Moles of KHP = 0.005 moles of NaOH (according to above chemical reaction)
24.55 mL solution contains = 0.005 moles of NaOH
so, 1 mL solution = 0.005/24.55 = 0.000204 moles NaOH per mL
Hence, 1000 mL (=1 L) solution will contain = 0.000204 *1000
= 0.204 moles/mL NaOH
