Today, the epic center of this debate has moved to Washington, D.C. regarding the Washington Redskins football team. In fact, a total of 50 Senators have written a letter demanding the name be changed. What other issues are affecting Native Americans today? Native American Speaks Out on Mascot Controversies - A review

The video features Tara Houska, a Native American and her take on the DC council's bill to ban public school mascots that are offensive to Native Americans. It is a very sensible and mature argument put forth, where she states that such a bill will be a great precedent in making all children feel equal at schools. She also says that it is important that kids are not taught to be racist from a very young age. She also says that in the name of honoring them and following a proud tradition, such mascots are only causing more harm and chances for abuse. It is all about the fight for dignity, equality, and personhood - in her own words.

And I agree, I think there are other ways to honor and uphold the status of Native Americans.

What other issues are affecting Native Americans today?

The following are some of the major issues that Native Americans face today:

1. Unemployment
2. Illegal land seizure
3. Exploitation of natural resources
4. Poor education system
5. Poor housing
6. A high number of youth suicides
7. Slow loss of native languages
8. Poor healthcare

Is the mascot issue the most pressing issue facing Native Americans today?

Not really. There are other pressing issues, but that doesn't mean that this step should not be taken. It is just that, media coverage on this scale should be given to the other pressing issues as well. The government should recognize and do more for the Native Americans by improving their standard of living.

There are many issues that need immediate attention. My top picks would be:

1. Access to better healthcare

3. Better employment opportunities
4. Proper housing and land
5. Preserving the native ecosystem
